Company Description
Keep Ireland Open (KIO) is Ireland's sole national voluntary organisation championing the right of recreational users to responsible access to the countryside - from mountains and seashores to lakes, rivers and historic sites. Through persistent lobbying of government, politicians, tourism bodies and EU institutions, KIO seeks legislative change that will give walkers, cyclists and other outdoor enthusiasts a clear, legal right of way and, where appropriate, a freedom to roam over rough grazing land.
The group's work spans research, advocacy and on-the-ground support. It monitors local-authority development plans, submits objections, resolves access disputes, and campaigns against intrusive barbed-wire fencing. KIO also promotes the creation and maintenance of well-marked public rights-of-way, encourages local community groups to register pathways, and raises awareness of access issues in the national and local media. By protecting archaeological and natural heritage while fostering walking and cycling tourism, Keep Ireland Open is building a more open, inclusive Irish countryside for all.
