Company Description
Oweninny Wind Farm Power 3 Designated Activity Company operates Ireland’s largest on‑shore wind farm, delivering a total installed capacity of 192 MW – enough electricity to meet the average annual demand of roughly 140,000 homes and businesses. The wind farm is a joint venture between ESB and BnM and forms a key part of the nation’s ambition to achieve 80 % renewable energy by 2030. Developed in two phases, the site now hosts 60 modern turbines, with the first 29 erected in 2019 and a further 31 coming online in 2023.
Beyond power generation, Oweninny is committed to community enrichment. It administers a Community Benefit Fund that supports local projects, and it runs an educational scholarship scheme to foster the next generation of renewable‑energy professionals. Visitors can also explore the purpose‑built Visitor Interpretative Centre, which showcases the region’s history of peat production, the transition to wind energy, and ongoing bog‑rehabilitation efforts.
The farm is situated in north Mayo, west of Crossmolina and east of Bangor Erris, just north of the N59 road, occupying around 2,400 hectares of former peat‑harvesting land. Oweninny’s blend of clean energy production and community investment makes it a cornerstone of sustainable development in the west of Ireland.
