Company Description
Cuimhneamh an Chláir Company Limited by Guarantee is a community‑driven heritage organisation dedicated to collecting, digitising and safeguarding the oral history and folklore of County Clare. Founded by sisters Jenny Scheunemann and Christina O’Connor, the charity records the memories of ordinary people – from Maureen Synan’s wedding traditions in Cooraclare to musician Chris Droney’s tales of “fairy music” in Bellharbour – and preserves them in an accessible digital archive.
The core of the project is its volunteer programme. Trained “Cuairteoirí” (visitors) travel within their own neighbourhoods to interview elders and neighbours, capturing stories, songs and anecdotes on audio and video. These recordings are then shared at community events and with partners in education, research, culture, the arts and health, enriching local curricula and public programmes. Cuimhneamh an Chláir also invites the wider public to contribute their own recollections, ensuring the official story of Co. Clare remains a living, evolving tapestry.
Based in County Clare, the organisation offers regular newsletters and opportunities for individuals and groups to become involved, making the county’s rich intangible heritage both visible and vibrant for present and future generations.
