Company Description
FuturEnergy Ireland is a joint‑venture company owned equally by Coillte and ESB, launched in November 2021 to accelerate Ireland’s transition to a low‑carbon energy system. By combining the assets and expertise of two leading semi‑state organisations, FuturEnergy Ireland designs, develops and operates large‑scale renewable generation and battery energy‑storage projects that bolster energy security and help meet the nation’s climate targets.
The company’s flagship initiative is the Ballynahone Battery Storage project, a high‑capacity battery system sited southwest of Buncrana, adjacent to the Trillick sub‑station in County Donegal. This facility will capture excess power from wind and solar farms and release it when demand peaks, providing a flexible, reliable supply for homes, businesses and the national grid. FuturEnergy Ireland’s ambition is to deliver more than 1 GW of renewable capacity together with a supporting network of storage solutions by 2030, contributing significantly to Ireland’s goal of generating 80 % of electricity from renewable sources.
