LAFCADIO HEARN JAPANESE GARDENS

Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens is a charitable garden and cultural organisation situated in the seaside town of Tramore, County Waterford. Inspired by the life and travels of Irish-Greek writer Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, the site comprises eleven distinct garden areas that trace his journey from a Victorian garden through American and Greek landscapes to an authentic Japanese setting. The gardens showcase a variety of Japanese plants, architectural features and seasonal displays, offering visitors a tranquil haven of beauty and cultural discovery.

The organisation provides a range of visitor experiences, including ticketed entry, guided tours, an annual membership scheme and gift vouchers. Families can enjoy a specially designed children's discovery trail, secret pathways and woodland walks that bring Hearn's folklore to life. The venue also accommodates weddings, private ceremonies and community events, and will welcome the new Kokoro Cultural Centre in 2026. Seasonal attractions such as the Enchanted Garden Winter Lights further enrich the programme. Supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development, Pobal and local volunteers, the gardens combine cultural heritage with a strong commitment to sustainability.
