Founded in 1978, the Irish Museums Trust (IMT) is a non‑profit charitable organisation devoted to the development and improvement of the museum sector across the island of Ireland. Working in partnership with the Irish Museums Association, IMT champions best practice, encourages innovation and provides vital support to museums, heritage bodies and scholars alike.

A cornerstone of the Trust’s work is its annual small‑grant programme, which awards five grants of up to €1,000/£850 each. These grants are open to museum professionals and to master’s or doctoral students conducting research that advances the understanding, management or development of Irish museums. By funding projects and fostering peer‑to‑peer knowledge exchange, the scheme also strengthens national and international networking within the sector. The next round of applications opens in early 2026.

In addition to its grant‑making, IMT recognises outstanding contributions through its yearly recipients lists (2021‑2024) and the Joan Duff Memorial, underscoring its commitment to celebrating excellence throughout Ireland’s vibrant museum community.
