Company Description
Whiddy Island Development Association (WIDA) is a community-driven organisation that has been supporting the needs of Whiddy Island for around three decades. Its core mission is to preserve the island's heritage, enhance its public spaces and provide essential services that keep the community thriving. From the annual hedge-cutting of island verges and the meticulous upkeep of the historic graveyard, to the installation of stone benches, picnic tables and information boards along the Baltunta strand and the Sheep's Head Way loop, WIDA creates lasting amenities for residents and visitors alike.
Key projects include the development of a heritage trail that showcases local folklore, the provision of a pontoon for Bantry Bay Harbour, and the ambitious construction of a multipurpose community hall - a hub that will house family histories, photographs and memorabilia for future generations. To fund these initiatives, WIDA runs the popular "Split the Pot" fortnightly draw and offers commemorative building blocks, allowing supporters to have their names permanently displayed in the new hall.
Through volunteer effort, fundraising and collaboration with bodies such as Cork County Council, WIDA continues to safeguard Whiddy Island's environment, culture and community spirit.
