Company Description
The Press Council of Ireland, together with the Office of the Press Ombudsman, is the independent body that safeguards the quality and integrity of Ireland's newspapers, magazines and online news outlets. By promoting the highest professional and ethical standards and defending freedom of expression, the Council oversees the implementation of the Code of Practice - a set of eleven principles that all member publications must meet.
Through a free, impartial service, the Office of the Press Ombudsman receives and resolves complaints about material published by member titles, including articles, photographs, headlines, cartoons, podcasts and video content. Where possible, disputes are settled by conciliation or mediation; if that proves impossible, the Ombudsman makes a decision based on the Code. The Council also handles appeals and referrals, publishing its decisions to ensure transparency and accountability.
The organisation works with a broad network of print and digital publishers across the Republic, offering a clear route for the public to raise concerns and for the press to demonstrate its commitment to truth, accuracy and respect for rights.
