Company Description
The Wicklow Uplands Council is an independent voluntary organisation that brings together more than 50 diverse member groups and individuals to champion the people, places and nature of the Wicklow uplands. Acting as a collective voice, the Council works to protect and promote the region's unique habitats - from blanket bog and heath to the rich flora and fauna that support one of Ireland's highest deer populations - while also celebrating its deep archaeological heritage dating back 9,000 years.
Through a range of initiatives the Council supports farmers and property owners, nurtures sustainable tourism centred on iconic sites such as the ancient monastic city of Glendalough, and enhances recreation for hill-walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. It maintains and promotes a network of way-marked trails, including the renowned Wicklow Way, the Avonmore Way and St Kevin's Way, catering to users of all abilities. The Sustainable Uplands (SUAS) Pilot Project exemplifies its commitment to innovative land-management solutions for commonages and hill farms, and a lively calendar of events keeps the local community engaged and informed.
