Linked through EURIPA – the European Rural & Isolated Practitioners’ Association – the Institute collaborates with the British Institute of Rural Health and a range of professional bodies in other European nations, creating a virtual information‑exchange chain that supports practitioners, policy‑makers and community groups working in remote settings.

Its activities span research, education and community development. The Institute organises the Rural Satellite Conference, contributes papers to the WONCA network and runs specialised projects such as the St Brendan’s Village initiative, sheltered housing units and social housing for older people. It also supports rural doctors through dedicated resources and publishes articles in national newspapers, highlighting the challenges and innovations of rural health care. By leveraging EU‑funded programmes such as the BIOMED project, the Institute ensures that cutting‑edge knowledge reaches those who need it most in Ireland’s countryside.
