Blackshell Limited operates Blackshell Farm, a certified organic mussel farm situated in Westport, Co. Mayo, where it cultivates rope-grown mussels in the pristine waters of Clew Bay. The company produces high-quality cotton-mussel mesh - a biodegradable material that supports mussel growth - and harvests organic mussels without the use of additives, fertilisers, pesticides or other treatments.

Sustainability sits at the heart of Blackshell's operations. A zero-waste policy governs every work site, with floats made from recycled plastics and a preference for second-hand machinery components. Harvesting techniques allow undersized mussels to be re-sown, ensuring full maturity and protecting the marine environment. The farm's fuel-efficient fleet delivers an impressive yield of 80 tonnes of mussels per tonne of diesel, and ongoing research aims to create even greener mussel-mesh production methods.

Recognised for its environmental stewardship, Blackshell Farm has received the Aquaculture, Environmental and Social Responsibility Award from BIM, Ireland's Seafood Development Agency, underscoring its commitment to preserving Clew Bay for future generations while supplying premium, sustainably farmed protein.
