NATIONAL SUICIDE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

The National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) is a recognised centre of excellence in suicide and self-harm prevention, operating both nationally and internationally. In December 2015 the Foundation was designated by the World Health Organisation as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Surveillance and Research in Suicide Prevention, underscoring its leading role in evidence-based policy and practice.

A core activity of the NSRF is the National Registry Ireland, a systematic database that records and reports on individuals who attend hospital Emergency Departments following self-harm injuries. This robust surveillance platform informs research, supports public-health strategies and helps shape preventative interventions. While the NSRF does not provide direct clinical services, it offers clear guidance to those seeking help, directing them to a range of reputable resources.

The Foundation also curates and disseminates cutting-edge research, publishes an annual report, and organises events such as seminars for World Mental Health Day and World Suicide Prevention Day. By maintaining a quarterly e-newsletter and hosting specialist gatherings, the NSRF keeps professionals, policymakers and the wider community informed about the latest developments in suicide prevention.
