Company Description
Donegal Famine Heritage Centre (Dunfanaghy) Company Limited By Guarantee operates a vibrant community heritage centre just south-west of the village of Dunfanaghy, a short walk from Holy Cross Church. Open since 1995, the centre serves both locals and visitors as a hub for cultural events, tourist information and the starting point of the Dunfanaghy Heritage Trail. Its facilities include a craft shop showcasing Irish-made gifts, a cosy coffee shop, a playpark for families, a permanent exhibition on the workhouse's history, and ample parking.
Rooted in the historic 1845 workhouse - the last of its kind to open in Ireland and a former refuge during the Famine - the centre transforms a place of tragedy into a space for learning and community connection. It offers guided tours, heritage-trail advice and a venue for local crafts, helping to celebrate and preserve the coastal town's rich cultural legacy. Open daily from 10 am to 5 pm between March and December, the centre welcomes anyone keen to explore Donegal's past and present.
